Skeleton Fingers

An Otter alternative for recordings you already have

Otter is built around live meetings. If your job is turning audio and video files into text, Skeleton Fingers is free in your browser, fast when you need it, and never requires a subscription.

When Otter is the right tool

Otter.ai is a meeting assistant. Its pricing page describes a bot that joins Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet to write and share notes, live transcription, and AI chat across your meetings. If you want something sitting in your calls taking notes while you talk, Otter does that and Skeleton Fingers does not.

Where recorded files get awkward

A lot of people looking for an Otter alternative are not replacing a meeting bot. They already have a recording: an interview, a lecture, a two hour workshop, a folder of voice memos. On Otter, imported files have their own limits. As of September 2026, Otter's pricing page lists:

Otter plans and file limits, from otter.ai/pricing as of September 2026
Otter planPriceAudio and video file importsLongest conversation
BasicFree3, lifetime30 minutes
Pro$16.99 per user per month billed monthly, less billed annually10 per month90 minutes
Business$30 per user per month billed monthlyUnlimited, with imported-file transcription capped at 6,000 minutes per user per month4 hours

In practice, a free Otter account can import three files in total, and a single 90 minute lecture is longer than the free plan's 30 minute limit per conversation. Otter Basic does include 300 transcription minutes a month, which is generous if your recordings are short.

How Skeleton Fingers handles files instead

You choose how each file gets transcribed.

In your browser

  • Free and unlimited, no account needed
  • Runs the Whisper speech model on your own device
  • Your audio never leaves your device
  • Speed depends on your computer; the first run downloads the model once
  • No speaker labels

Fast

  • Runs on our servers
  • Your browser converts and uploads the audio (about 115 MB per hour), then our servers transcribe it in seconds; total time varies with your device and connection
  • Speaker labels and automatic language detection
  • Free account: fast files up to 30 minutes, 3 a day
  • Your recording is stored with your account until you delete it

Pay for hours, not a plan

For files over 30 minutes, or more than 3 in a day, you have two options. Hour packs cost $5 for 3 fast hours, paid once, and the hours never expire. Buy one for a single project or several at a time. If you transcribe every week, Pro is $9.99 a month for 10 fast hours, and you can cancel anytime.

Here is what a 90 minute lecture looks like: it is longer than the free 30 minutes, so all 90 minutes come from a pack, leaving 90 minutes in the pack for later. The same lecture in the browser lane costs nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Skeleton Fingers really free?

Yes. The in-your-browser lane is free and unlimited and needs no account. With a free account, the fast lane is free for files up to 30 minutes, 3 a day. For longer files or more in a day, you can buy a $5 hour pack or subscribe to Pro.

Does Skeleton Fingers label speakers like Otter?

The fast lane labels speakers. The free in-browser lane does not, so use the fast lane for interviews and meetings where you need to know who said what.

Can Skeleton Fingers join my Zoom or Teams calls?

No. It transcribes recordings. Record the call in Zoom, Teams or Google Meet as you normally would, then upload the file.

Is there anything to cancel?

Hour packs are one-time payments, so there is nothing to cancel and the hours never expire. Pro is billed monthly and you can cancel anytime.
